What is a Solar PV(Photovoltaic) System and how does it work?
A Solar PV system is a power station that generates electricity from sunlight.
Solar panels (PV modules), in the solar plant convert sunlight to electricity and produce
direct current (DC). This DC is fed to an inverter to convert to alternating current (AC).

What are the steps involved in installation?

What approvals are needed? Does Vaultra help in getting them?
No permissions are required if you are installing an off-grid (battery backed) solar PV
system. But in case you wish to avail net metering option, certain permissions are required
to be taken from the local electricity authority. Vaultra helps customer through the
application and review process with the local utility company, till the net meter is
How much area is required for a solar plant?
1 kW solar system requires approximately 10 sq. m (or 100 sq. ft) of shadow free area.
How many units of electricity is produced by a 1kW plant?
A 1kW plant generates 3-5 units of electricity in a day depending upon the location.
What is the average life of the solar panels?
The solar panels have a performance warranty for a period of 25 years, however the
projected life is much longer
What is Net Metering, and is it mandatory?What is the average
life of the solar panels?
Net metering is not mandatory. However, it ensures that you maximize your savings from
solar. Net metering allows you to sell excess (unconsumed) solar power back to the grid.For
example, if on a given day you generated 10 units from solar and consumed only 7 units, the
balance 3 units will be sold back to the grid.
How long does it take to install the plant?
From the time of sales confirmation (advance payment), it usually takes 2-3 weeks for
installation to start. The on-site construction / civil work phase is typically, 7 days for
residential projects, and 1-2 months for larger commercial projects.
The time required for obtaining utility permissions varies across states and regions:
In Maharashtra and Karnataka it usually takes around 4-6 weeks, and in Tamil Nadu it
generally takes 8 weeks
Will the Solar Installation damage my roof?
No. On an average, solar panels add only 1-2 kg of weight per square foot of roof area. All
roofs are typically able to withstand significantly more weight than this.
Also, when the Site Visit is done by our representative, they will inspect the roof for
robustness. In the unusual event of the roof not being able to support the weight of the
solar panel system, they would be able to suggest reinforcement mechanisms that would make
a rooftop system possible.
What about the maintenance of the plant?
The annual maintenance and recurring costs are almost negligible. For optimum performance,
the system only requires cleaning of modules in every 15 days. For off-grid systems where
batteries are used, the batteries need to be replaced every 3-5 years.

Is solar power cheaper than diesel generators?
Yes,solar power is much cheaper than power from diesel generators. Today average power from
solar is Rs. 5-7 per unit (For commercial and Industrial segments) while average power from
diesel generator is Rs. 17 per unit (a litre of diesel generates around 3-4 units).
